Time zones & compliance

How does the dialer respect each lead's local calling hours?

· 2 min read

Short answer

Before every dial, DialerDay works out the lead's time zone: their own, else their area code's, else their GoHighLevel location's, else the campaign default. The lead is only dialed if it's inside the campaign's calling window in that zone, on an operating day, not a holiday, inside any state calling rules, inside GoHighLevel work hours, and in a time zone the campaign calls.

Calling a lead at 7am, or at 9:30pm their time, isn't just rude. Depending on the state, it can be illegal. With leads across the country, "our hours" mean nothing. What matters is the lead's hours. DialerDay checks them before every dial.

Finding the lead's time zone

OrderSource
1The contact's own time zone (GoHighLevel, CSV column, API, lead webhook)
2The time zone of their phone number's area code
3Their GoHighLevel location's time zone
4The campaign's *Time zone for contacts without one*

The same zone is used everywhere: calling windows, callbacks, call-frequency days and weeks, lead age in cadences, and the "best hours" score.

The checks before a lead is dialed

  1. Calling window: *Call from* and *Call until* on the campaign, in the lead's zone.
  2. Operating days: the weekdays the campaign dials, in the lead's zone.
  3. Holidays: company holidays, with public holidays added in one click, are skipped if the campaign skips holidays.
  4. Time zones: optionally limit a campaign to certain zones. Leads elsewhere wait until you add their zone.
  5. GoHighLevel work hours: if the lead's location has work hours set.
  6. State calling rules: turn on *Follow state calling rules* to apply each state's legal hours and closed days on top (Settings → Compliance, editable).

A lead that fails any check isn't skipped or failed. It waits and becomes callable when its window opens.

Example

Campaign window 9am–8pm, Monday–Saturday. It's 11am Eastern on a Saturday:

LeadTheir timeResult
New York11:00 SatCallable
Chicago10:00 SatCallable
Los Angeles08:00 SatWaits until 9:00 their time
A state whose rules bar Saturday calls—Waits until Monday (with state rules on)

Callbacks are a special case

A callback was requested by the lead for a specific time, so by default it ignores the campaign's own window, days and holidays. Legal state hours still apply. You can also make callbacks respect the window (Settings → Queue priority). See how callbacks work.

Texts have their own quiet hours

SMS has separate quiet hours, so a workflow or agent text doesn't go out at 3am the lead's time.

FAQ

Quick questions

Is this legal advice?

No. The state rules are a starting point to review with your counsel. Laws change and have exceptions, which is why every rule is editable.
